What Is Script Kiddie?

Script kiddie, or skid, is a term commonly heard when talking about hacker culture. It depicts a young hacker who has a lot to learn but acts as if he knows everything.

Most of them are teenagers who are in it for fun and treat hacking as a game. Mostly they hack for vanity. They also don't make any real effort to improve their hacking skills.

Most don't even know how to write hacking programs or 'scripts' and are content to pirate stuff made by other people. This lack of skills often makes their capture easier as it leaves a trail that investigators can easily trace.

What Is Script Kiddie

In Internet slang, “script kiddie” is a pejorative term used to describe someone who uses scripts or code developed by real hackers to attack networks or websites. Script kiddies have little or no coding skills, and rely on readily available tools or exploit kits to carry out their attacks. Script kiddies also use variations of the term, such as "skiddie" or "skid".

Script Kiddies VS Real Hackers

Script kiddies differ from real hackers in that they don't understand the source code in any way. In other words, they don't know how the tools they run work or even how the attacks they use work. These people only download software to use against targets. But they can go from script kiddie to novice hacker once they start learning proper programming and know the logic behind the code they are working with.

The Origins of Script Kiddies

According to LiveOverflow, a dedicated YouTube channel for hacking enthusiasts, the term “kodez kiddies” may be a precursor to the word. It often functions as a derogatory term. "Kodez kiddies" was mentioned several times in 1994 in Yet Another Bulletin Board System (YABBS), published by Alex Wetmore, then a freshman at Carnegie Mellon University.

However, modern use of the term is associated with an exploit called "crontab". A forum thread from 1996 retrieved from r00t.org reveals conversations between hackers at the time mentioning "script kiddies."

The term also appears in two articles on the 1998 issue of phrack.org. The author of the first article describes the act of using a port scanner to find hosting vulnerabilities as “script kiddie behavior”. Another occurrence of the term in publications is in sarcastic comments about hacked hacking websites. In essence, the passage reads: "Let's give it a script that every clueless script kiddie breaks into thousands of sites around the world."

Use of Kiddie Scripts in Gaming

The gaming community consists of a group of developers, hackers, and cheat-devs who peddle game leaks and scams to a select group of clients. Script kiddies (also known as “enchiladas”) are the “hangers-on” version of this community. They infiltrate game groups and forums to steal code that developers want to sell. That's the main reason why script kiddies get the ire of the gaming community. The other, of course, is that they don't have sophisticated expertise in game design or programming.

So what is a script kiddie? In simple terms a script kiddie is an amateur with no experience to write their own programs and tries to illegally gain access to a computer system using programs (scripts) that someone else has written.
