What is Google Play Services?

What is Google Play Services? We will explain what the function of Google Play Service is, do we need it, can we delete it and much more.

If you have had an Android phone for a while, you will be familiar with an ongoing system process called “Google Play Services”. But what is Google Play Services, and can you remove it?

Let's see what Google Play Services does, and whether you need it or not.

What is Google Play Services?

Google Play Services is an inherent part of Android that makes app developers' lives easier. It acts as a bridge between Google apps and services so that developers can implement Google related features easily.

For example, you are using a geocaching app that uses Google Maps to display your location and the location you want to go to. When you start it, the app may close itself and open Google Maps to show you where to go. However, that's a very long-winded way of doing it.

Instead, apps can use Google Play Services to talk to Google Maps. The geocaching application can then get data and images from Google Maps without needing to boot up Maps. It can even fetch data when Google Maps is not running on your phone!

Google Play Services functionality

Google Play Services is used to update Google apps and apps from Google Play. This component provides core functionality such as authentication to your Google services, synchronized contacts, access to all the latest user privacy settings and higher quality, lower-powered location-based services.

Google Play Services also enhances your app experience. This speeds up offline searching, provides a more immersive map, and enhances the gaming experience. The app may not work if you delete Google Play Services.

Do We Need Google Play Services?

“Necessity” might be too strong a word when it comes to Android apps, but you'll find that it goes into a lot of apps. When an app developer wants their app to use one of Google's services, they must go through Google Play Services.

Thus, if you delete Google Play Services, it will break functionality for many apps. That is, of course, if you can remove the service in the first place.

Why Google Play Services Requires So Many Permissions?

Google Play Services Permissions

If you take a look at the App permissions for Google Play Services, you will see that it requests a lot of permissions to access body sensors, calendar, camera, contacts, microphone, phone, SMS and storage. It needs so many permissions because Play Services acts as a hub where other apps depend on the security services provided by Google.

Google Play Services has system-level access to provide some built-in features and hide sensitive information from other apps. Also, almost all Google apps use Google Play Services.

Can We Remove Google Play Services?

Since Google Play Services is important for apps to show you information, Android doesn't allow you to remove it. Because of this, there is no official way to uninstall the app.

In the past, Google Play Services could be disabled like any other application. However, currently, you cannot disable or force stop the app. Both options are grayed out if you try them.

But Google Play Consumes a Lot of Battery!

You are probably reading this because Google Play Services is currently draining your battery very fast. Instead of trying to disable the service there is a better solution, consider what is possible using Google Play Services.

For example, if you are using an application that relies heavily on Google Maps, then it will force Google Play Services to work continuously to suit your needs. If you reduce your usage of the app, you reduce the number of times Google Play Services is called, thereby reducing battery drain.

Likewise, apps that track your location also need permission from Google Play to do so. If your battery starts to drop drastically due to Google Play Services, reduce your location tracking usage or turn off your GPS function in Settings > Location.

Conclusion

So what is Google Play Services? Simply put, Google Play Services is a background service that runs on Android, which in turn helps integrate Google's advanced functionality with other apps. It is also used to update Google apps.
