What Is Frame Rate In Video And How Is It Affected?

You may often hear a videographer talk about video frame rate, but what is video frame rate?

If you are new to making videos, the term that often comes up is the video frame rate or frames per second (fps). This is a special function that can be changed on the camera and can greatly affect how video is captured and viewed on different devices.

Today, you will find out what video frame rate is and why you should change it according to the type of video you are shooting.

What are Frame Rates?

Knowing what frame rate is in video is the best way to improve the quality of your video production. To understand what frame rate is in video, you first need to know that video is not just one continuous recording. Rather, it is a collection of several images that are rotated sequentially on the screen to make the images move. The technical term is called the frame rate per second (fps).

What is the Standard Frame Rate?

The standard video frame rate for the film industry has been 24fps since 1920. However, the standard video frame rate for television is 30fps in North America, Japan, and most of the rest of the world. In recent times, manufacturers have used different combinations of frame rates to get optimal results depending on the type of scene that needs to be captured.

Which Frame Rate Should Be Used?

Modern cameras have options for multiple frame rates ranging from 24fps to 240fps on some cameras. The way each frame rate is perceived on screen is very different. Therefore, you have to choose a suitable and optimal frame rate for your project.

24FPS – Cinematic Videos and Movies

The standard 24fps gives you the truly cinematic look we all expect from movies. This is because 24fps looks the most natural to the human eye, which is why you get used to it. So, if you want to record movies or general scenes, I recommend recording at 24fps.

30FPS – Live TV Or Sports

The second 30fps option is slightly faster than 24fps. This is usually used in live TV, sports or soap operas. It only has six frames per second, which provides a subtle (but less cinematic) feel that works well for live TV.

For general videos, you can't go wrong by choosing 24fps or 30fps. But if you want a "cinematic" movie look, choose 24fps. For interviews or documentaries, 30fps should look better.

60FPS – Action Movies And Fast-Moving Sports

Some films are now produced at 60 frames per second. This gives movies a very smooth experience, but takes up a lot of storage space. Faster frame rates are primarily used for fast-paced action and sports films because there is less motion blur.

Motion blur occurs when there is movement within the frame, but it moves too quickly between frames, so it looks blurry. This is common at low frame rates like 24fps. A simple solution is to increase the frame rate, which reduces blur and provides a crisp, clean look. This is especially helpful in some sports, like F1 or baseball.

120FPS Or Greater – Slow Motion Effects

You may be a fan of slow motion videos, especially those that slow down all the action for you to watch. This type of video is achieved by a simple method, they are recorded at very high fps and then slowed down to give a slow motion effect. Because more frames have been captured in one second, all the action is captured and looks good when slowed down. However, if you've ever played a 120fps or 240fps video while it was being recorded, you're bound to notice a strange-looking effect.

If you want to record any kind of slow motion effect, for example, a soccer kick, it's best to record at a higher frame rate. However, keep in mind that you must use a video editor such as Adobe Premiere Pro to slow down the clip and get the desired effect.

If you're using a smartphone with a slow-motion shooting mode like the one on the iPhone, it records the clip at 120fps or 240fps and automatically slows it down for you. That's why slow motion footage from the iPhone looks so good.

Does Frame Rate Affect Video File Size?

The frame rate does affect your video file size significantly. Think of it this way, if you shoot a one minute video at 30fps, you actually have 1,800 images combined to make the video. Now, if you want to shoot the same one minute video at 60fps, then you have 3,600. That's basically double the number of images, which usually end up in the final file being twice the file size.

Another factor that affects the size of the video is the resolution you take. 1080p 120fps videos may be larger in size than 4K 24fps videos. It depends on your camera settings. The camera usually tells you the amount of footage you can shoot in a certain resolution/fps (depending on how much free storage you have.) You can use this to plan how long you can shoot.

Does Frame Rate Affect Video Quality?

The quality of the video only depends on the resolution you take. In general, the higher the image resolution, the higher the quality. However, higher image resolutions (such as 4K) also result in large file sizes. The frame rate will only affect how smooth the video is, it will not affect the clarity of the video.

Conclusion

All the frame rates seem a little confusing at first. In my opinion, the best way to understand this is to experiment with all frame rates. Select a scene and shoot the same scene at 24fps, 30fps, 60fps and 120fps. Watch all the clips, and you will get an idea of how the higher fps affects the video.

24fps video will look more cinematic and filmy, and 30fps will look like natural scenery but 60fps and 120fps might look a bit weird and unnatural (due to higher frames). Once you understand how all frame rates work, you'll be able to properly integrate them into your workflow and get the most out of every clip.
