10 Reasons Why Linux Is Better Than Windows

Are you wondering if Linux is better than Windows? Yes, Linux is better than Windows and in this article, we will look at the advantages of Linux over Windows and why the Linux operating system is better than Windows.

If you are a novice Linux user, it may seem obvious that a “Windows” OS is a better or easier choice when compared to Linux. In those cases, if you don't enjoy using a Linux distro then Windows would be the obvious choice.

Advantages of Linux Compared to Windows

1.Open Source

In the Windows world, you cannot modify the OS because the source code is not open source. The same thing happens with proprietary apps running on top of it. However, in the case of Linux, users can even download the source code, modify it and use it.

Because Linux is completely open source project and this is a plus. Admin knows, most people don't care about the openness of Linux, but you need to know, this is the most important feature in using GNU/Linux.

2. Security

Let's face it, Windows OS is vulnerable to many kinds of attacks (or hacks). However, Linux is not as fragile as Windows. It's definitely not invulnerable, but much safer.

It's just the way Linux works that makes it a secure operating system. Overall, the package management process, repository concept, and several other features allow Linux to be more secure than Windows.

When you install Windows, you need to download/purchase an Antivirus program to keep your computer safe from hackers and malware. However, Linux does not require the use of such Anti-Virus programs. Of course, some software is still available to help you keep your system free of threats, but most of the time it isn't necessary if you are using a Linux system.

Being safe will naturally make things easier for you and also save you money as you don't have to buy premium Antivirus software!

3. Perfect For Programmers

Linux supports almost all major programming languages ( Python, C/C++, Java, Perl, Ruby, etc.). Apart from that, it offers a wide range of useful applications for programming purposes.

The Linux terminal is better to use than the Windows command line for developers. You will find many libraries developed natively for Linux. Also, many programmers point out that the package manager in Linux helps them get things done easily.

Interestingly, the bash scripting ability is also one of the strongest reasons why programmers prefer to use the Linux OS.

4. Software updates

Microsoft pushes software updates when it receives a series of problems or if something major needs fixing. And, for this reason, your system could potentially crash with the update or end up waiting for another update to fix your problem for a long time.

We are sure that if you have a Windows supported system for a long time, you may experience problems with every update.

However, with Linux, you'll be eyeing software updates to address every minor bug and mostly not breaking the system if you're using an LTS version of a distribution.

So, with Linux, you will see more effective and faster updates to fix any problems you may be facing.

5. Minimal use of system resources

Linux systems are known to consume less system resources (RAM, disk space, etc.) when compared to Windows. Hardware vendors have realized the popularity of Linux and started to make hardware/drivers compatible with Linux. When running the OS on older hardware, Windows is slower.

Linux distros like Lubuntu, Knoppix, LXLE, antiX, Puppy Linux are best suited for older machines. An old horse like a 386 or 486 machine with a decent amount of RAM over (124/256) can run Linux.

So, being an efficient OS, the Linux distribution can be installed onto various systems (low-end or high-end). In contrast, the Windows operating system has higher hardware requirements.

Overall, even if you compare a high-end Linux system and a high-end Windows powered system, the Linux distribution will be superior. Well, that's the reason most of the servers around the world prefer to run on Linux than on Windows environment.

6. Has Various Types of Distribution

On Windows you may only have plans that differ in license terms, activation period, plan features, and price.

On the other hand, you will find tons of Linux distributions catering to different needs. So, you can choose to install any of the available Linux distros according to your needs.

For example, there are Linux distros for programmers, there are Linux distros for gaming, there are Linux distros for low specifications, and many more.

7. Free to Use

Linux is publicly accessible for free! However, this is not the case with Windows!

Linux is free while Windows is not. Windows license fees differ for desktop and server versions. In the case of Linux OS be it desktop or server, the distro is free of charge. Not only the OS even the related apps are completely free and open source.

You don't have to pay 100-250 USD to get a genuine copy of a Linux distro (like Ubuntu, Fedora). So, it's completely free. Although some Linux distros charge a fee for support, they are cheaper when compared to the price of a Windows license.

8. Better Community Support

You don't need to hire an expert to solve the problem you are having on your Linux system. You just have to search the web for a solution or post a thread for others to solve the problem.

Within minutes of posting a thread on any of the Linux forums, you might expect a reply along with a detailed solution that will finally help solve your problem free of cost! Last but not least, you should find solutions to most of the common problems in forums which are explained properly without having to do much research.

There are many active Linux users who are always on hand to respond to any relevant threads that may have been created. The number of active community users in such forums is greater than the number of active members in Windows-focused forums. However, community response may vary depending on the Linux distribution used.

9. Reliability

Windows, as we know it, is getting slow day by day. You may want to reinstall Windows after a while when you experience crashes or slowdowns on your Windows OS system.

If you use Linux, you don't have to worry about reinstalling just to experience a faster and smoother system. Linux helps your system run smoothly for a longer period of time.

Also, with Windows, you have to adapt to a habit where you keep rebooting the system for almost everything.

* If recently installed software, reboot!

* If recently removed software, reboot!

* If recently installed Windows update, reboot!

* If the system seems to be slowing down, reboot!

However, in the case of Linux, you don't need to reboot for the situations mentioned above. You can carry on with your work comfortably, and Linux won't bother you.

Linux is more reliable when compared to Windows. Linux will rock at its best, built-in security that results in unparalleled uptime. Linux distro developers are very active and release updates big and small from time to time.

Another fact that proves Linux to be reliable is the web server. You can observe that most of the Internet giants like Google and Facebook run on Linux. In fact, almost all supercomputers run on Linux.

So, Why isn't Windows preferred over Linux for critical tasks? That's because Linux is much more reliable than Windows OS. Of course, that doesn't mean Linux isn't problematic. But, if we look at the bigger picture, Linux is reliable by design.

10. Privacy

Microsoft definitely tries to anonymize the data it collects from each user. However, it doesn't look as convincing with Microsoft's latest Windows 10. Microsoft has received a lot of criticism about how it collects data, what to collect and what not to.

If you've ever used Windows 10, you can only head over to the privacy settings to find that they're all enabled by default. Even if you choose not to send information to Microsoft about your data, that information is still collected. Of course, Microsoft won't bother disclosing it officially with a press statement, but it sure is. So, you need a set of tools to disable Windows spy module.

Instead, Linux will be the perfect solution for maintaining your privacy. Because Linux distributions don't collect much data (or none at all). In addition, you don't need additional tools to protect your privacy.

Conclusion

There are many things we can do with Linux. Linux is very powerful, flexible, secure, reliable, stable and fun than Windows. We must always remember that free is not cheap and expensive is not the best. Now that you know the reasons why the Linux operating system is better than Windows, what do you think?
